North County Coastal is where San Diego gets its laid-back surf culture reputation. The stretch from Oceanside down to Del Mar is a collection of distinct beach towns, each with their own vibe — from Oceanside's revitalized downtown to Del Mar's upscale horse racing scene.
This is where locals escape when downtown feels too crowded. The pace is slower, the sunsets are better, and the fish tacos are just as good.
The Towns
Carlsbad
Family-friendly with the Flower Fields (March-May), LEGOLAND, a charming village downtown, and some of the best beaches in the county. The Carlsbad Village walkable district has excellent restaurants and boutique shops.
Encinitas
Surf town vibes — Swami's is one of the most famous surf breaks in California. The downtown strip on Coast Highway 101 has yoga studios, organic cafes, and the San Diego Botanic Garden.
Solana Beach
Small but mighty — the Cedros Design District is the best shopping in North County. Craft breweries, the Fletcher Cove beach park, and the Belly Up Tavern for live music.
Del Mar
Where the turf meets the surf. The Del Mar Racetrack (July-September), beautiful beaches, and upscale dining. The village has a European feel.
Oceanside
The most affordable coastal town. The historic pier, the Sunset Market on Thursday evenings, and a growing craft beer and restaurant scene.
Best Beaches in North County
Each town has its own stretch of sand, but standouts include Carlsbad State Beach, Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, Swami's (below the Self-Realization Fellowship), and Del Mar's North Beach (dog-friendly).
Getting Here
North County is 20-40 minutes north of downtown San Diego via I-5. The Coaster commuter train runs along the coast from Oceanside to downtown — it's one of the most scenic train rides in California.
